HAPPY BIRTHDAY BASTIAN!!!!! 10915263_10100235314325163_5991272975507907528_n

My name is Kristen Ruhlin, I’m a new mama to a boy named Bastian.

This blog is all about hitting the top restaurants with BIG strollers, tiny babies in big cities. So check in to see where Bastian and I have ventured and if we were asked to leave once they saw our HUGE SUV of a stroller roll in(we have a Bugaboo Cameleon, it’s big). We’re eaten’ food, burpin babies and taken names.

IT’S A BIRTHDAY POST

IMG_3888

This post is going to be about my baby boy who is now a toddler. I can’t even believe the year has gone by so fast. It seems impossible that one year ago I had only just met the love of my life. Happy Birthday my love, I hope you have the most adventurous life filled with love and laughter.

New York City and kids Birthday Parties is no joke friends. It’s NO Joke. First place to start, the place. Where can you house 15 plus people and let your little one be free to crawl around in a clean, safe environment? I asked other moms…the YMCA, baby gyms like AppleSeeds or MyGym, a restaurant. So I called these spots and got quotes.

$450/HR with 3 HOUR MINIMUM?!?!!?!?! Excuse me YMCA, come again? Holy cow. That was just the beginning. I’m not cheap but that was more than my 16th birthday, 21st and probably 30th all in one. So I had to start thinking out side the box…Churches, schools, bookstores…then it hit me. Rehearsal studios. Being an actor in NY you are introduced to another world that most don’t even know exists. The black box theaters, studios, and more. So I booked a rehearsal studio and threw a baby’s 1st Birthday. BOOM.

We were able to bring in our own food, drinks, toys, and decorations. The only thing we needed was to make sure we left it the way we found it. Most of these spaces also provide chairs and tables (yes all the other kid birthday spots charge per table and chair).

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION:

I won’t say exactly which space we threw our party at because it’s sort of on the down low and I’m sure the artists would be a little peeved if all these kids were swarming the quiet studio space with these events. But, I will provide a list of resources for other moms to call and check out…just best to say it’s for a birthday part and not mention it’s a kid. HINT.

Ripley-Grier studios– Several locations around the city.

440 Studios– East Village and under $40/hour

Roy Arias Studios–  They are cool with kid birthday’s but have special rates.

Art New York– Several spots

Shetler Studios– Lots of locations

These are just a few options and if you want more try this website below.

NYC Space Finder– you can pick your rate and location.

The LOOK:IMG_3853

I kept it super low key and simple. He’s 1 people. We filled the table with memorable quotes and info from this adorable company called CiinolinCiinolin_BirthCard_FA1_3__62396.1405323398.451.416 who has adorable stuff, and I decided to base my “theme” around the color of these cute cards. Yellow, light blue and brown.

FOOD:

I also thought of the babies here. I did light finger foods all of which were baby friendly. Fresh fruit, bite size rye bread, Vegan/Sugar Free treats made specially with the allergy notes from Whole Foods, Pirates Booty, Plum Organics Puffs in various flavors, and bite size cheese. It was over all pretty simple and we easily transported it all ourselves- in NYC no less. We did have a lot of hands on deck and the use of a GETT car which I use like my left arm. It’s still $10 bucks flat in the city…doesn’t get better people it just doesn’t. Use my code and get $20 bucks in your account when you sign up. I’m not joking, download that app. #GTKRIST7 use it. image2

WHOS WHO:

IMG_3889IMG_3877Bastian only has 1 friend but Mama has a few amazing friends who despite the fact I haven’t had a lot of one on one time in the past year at all, they are always so loving and supportive of every baby event. I feel so blessed to have friends like this in my life. Sara, Renie, Dan, Kyra and Robby you all are amazing people and we all love you so much!! Thanks for not ditching us when we became parents! 🙂 We also had a special visit from Bastian’s Sassy from Ga- who braved the cold weather to spend time with us and celebrate his day!! She spoiled this boy so much from endless toys, books, bath toys, treats to quality cuddle time, boy loves his Sassy.

RIP My First Baby Girl Sammy #PuppyLove #Love #Pets

SAMMY GIRL AKA WOOTER AKA LADY AKA MURLADY AKA WOOTY

Sammy Girl

Sammy Girl

I wanted to share a special post about one of my first babies who taught me how to be a mama before I actually became one. Sammy came into my life in a round about way…and I’m forever grateful for it.

When I first got Sammy, she insisted in doing a photo shoot of us together.

When I first got Sammy, she insisted in doing a photo shoot of us together.

Sammy is such a scene stealer.

Sammy is such a camera wh4*&.

I was working on an indie film years ago in LA, called She Wants Me with Josh Gad, aka Olaf from Frozen…2 of the producers on the film Mark and Christine are those people who literally try to help and house every dog that is in need, and Sammy was no different. It was a rainy day in LA when they spotted her on the side of Laurel Canyon walking in the rain…my teeny teeny girl. What a fighter she was. I think of her tiny, frail body and how she fought a little longer that day to somehow make it into my life and change me forever. It’s funny how life works that way. She was meant to bring some love to my life at that specific time.

My Wedding Day in Fl. 2013

My Wedding Day in Fl. 2013

Mark and Christine took her in and she was instantly our on set mascot- I already had one dog who was the love of my life, Chip- and wasn’t looking for another huge responsibility (I only had just gotten divorced and was his soul parent then). It’s a lot of work. But, after a few months with Christine and Mark, and not being able to place Sammy in a home with the special needs she required, I couldn’t say no. There was something so sweet about that little girl. She was just pure love.

Me and my girl.

Me and my girl.

I picked her up from their office one afternoon, nervous like I was adopting a new child…would I be a good enough parent…could I love another as much as my first…it all just fits the second they come into your arms. I took her to Petland and we got her new little pink outfits, and a pink bed- PINK everything (I never had a girl before- the fashion options were endless)!! She went everywhere with me from this day on…till her last.

Sammy, I am so sorry I didn’t take you in sooner…it’s the one thing I’ll always regret…I just had such a hard time letting you go. I wanted you to keep fighting like you had so many times in the past, but in the end I know you are one of the true, good friends I will keep and cherish with me always.

I see you.

I see you and you see me.

Baby B Rank:  Strollin I love the food here. I seriously dream about it. For the price and flavor I think it’s the best Taco in NYC. I said it. However…I will say I have been firstly, without the B-man and it was epic, great etc. Then we went back mid day- it was dead inside compared to a night crowd…and they wouldn’t let me give Bastian his baby food b/c it wasn’t off their menu? Um. Ok. Lame. Like so baffled my mind lame. Seriously who are offending here? I kindly and quickly stuffed it back in my bag and said I would feed it to him from there without displaying the baby food brand- in case it tempted the other customers(all 4 of them) to put down their taco for some Baby Plum Rice Puffs.

  • Food:  Best Taco in the city.
  • Price:  $3.96-15 The tacos are cheap and solo freaking good.

After using the amazing Nordic Beauty all week on my skin- I'm totally loving it.

After using the amazing Nordic Beauty all week on my skin- I’m totally loving it. –Kristen Ruhlin

So I was blessed to receive this amazing new product by Nordic Beauty. I have fair skin, and have been suffering from a lack of sleep since baby B is on an earlier sch. out here on the West Coast. This however, has been my life saver!

Nordic Beauty Anti Aging Cream

Nordic Beauty Anti Aging Cream

It is so thick and rich, you can feel the youth replenishing on your skin the second you start lathering it on. A little of this also goes a LONG way…so you can expect to get a good amount of use out it. It also feels light but provides enough coverage that you don’t really need anything else on. So amazing. It’s fast, organic(if your breastfeeding you don’t need to worry about putting this on your skin and hurting baby) and the scent is fresh and clean.

Totally recommend this for new moms, who wanna feel a little refreshed.

Check out the website HERE, and read all about what goes into the product, and hey even fancy faces like new mama Mila Kunis are using it as well!!

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin(at the right times) This place has the BEST Jerk wings you will ever have. EVER!! They are so amazing man…it be da best. The place gets full after 630pm so if you’re coming with a BIG A#$ stroller you have to think of other people and go early. We have done both and they did make it work, but there was a point where there were 3 families with strollers, and they asked the last group of Bugaboo’s to hit the road or wait about 30min.
  • Food:  This is why you come back again and again. Just do it. The sauce on the table is also so freaking JERK good I could order that and a fork and be good to go. I’ve had the ox-tail stew which was really different and seasoned very well but I wouldn’t get it again. The veggie curry is Da Bomb. Then there is the classic Jerk chicken which is EPIC!

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– One of my favorite Mexican spots in the East Village, NYU area. Brunch here is great and the Sangria is amazing. They have a fantastic happy hour that I have yet to try but it’s on my list.  I’ve gone to this spot several times with baby B in tow and they always find a spot for us to sit with our huge a@# stroller without making us feel bad about it. Huge space- enough said.
  • Food:  Best part about it. Love everything I have tried here. The thing I love most is the 3 salsas they give you and my favorite item is HUEVOS A LA MEXICANA. Yelp
  • Price:  $12-19; 1 Margaritas will have your baby strolling you home. Drink responsibly for god sake…you have a baby.

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– Not only did we have 2 BIG A@# Strollers, and 2 teething babies…we had 4 adults and walked right up and sat down at a table big enough for all of us! Woot Woot!!! No folding strollers, no high chairs- it’s just not how we roll yet. The kiddos rolled right up to the side of the table and joined us, brunch side. Mind you this was the UES location, I repeat the UES location, which screams SPACE. I haven’t hit up the LES yet and will do so as soon as I can with an update on here. Side note- Giggle is right down the street. Score.
  • Food:  The brunch menu was pretty standard but very yum. They were advertising a corn and squash soup which we never saw- it was red and creamy like a tomato bisque but still yummy according to Lindsay…and they take special orders for eggs and diet requests. Awesome. Plus, no evil eyes when feeding our babes at the table.
  • Price:  $12-19 per meal for brunch Yelp
  • Location:  UES and LES Spots- We hit up the UES location off Lexington and 73rd. This typically is a trek from our hood in the East Village/Styu Town but with GETT car service for the rest of 2014 it’s a no brainer…$10 flat rate rides people…$10. Boom. Download that app now.

The Spot:  “Umbertos Clam House” Little Italy NYC 132 Mulberry Street

  • Baby B Rank:  Strollin– They were helpful in giving us a spot all by ourselves in the back of the restaurant and all the serves were so sweet to little baby B. I had gone years ago to the original location which was charming, unique and had amazing food…I hadn’t been to the new location until now. A lot has changed, from my personal opinion.
  • Food:  I loved the food the first time I went years ago…we had a big group in from out of town and they wanted to experience Little Italy at it’s best, and this use to be my spot. The food as of today was very lack luster. The flavors were bland in the clam sauce and almost seemed to be canned. The fish dishes were over cooked and calamari was chewy. My husband enjoyed the Chicken Parm but would rather get it at about 4 other spots on Mulberry. The drinks; Sangria and wine were all served in plastic cups (even though we were sitting inside). Overall the dinning experience was really poor for food. I am so sad to see how much this place has changed over the years. The new location has lost all of it’s charm, which made you feel like you were transported in time. Sadly, I won’t be back.
  • Price:  $32 pitcher of Sangria, $9 glasses of wine in plastic cups. $20-30 per entree.
  • Location:  Little Italy (Click here for a map and list of all the spots to check out), NYC, Downtown

I shoved my big a#$ buggy down the isle and knocked over some wafer sized coeds and snagged a seat.
  • Food:  Only drinks. My mom and I cooled off after taking B man to the toy store and this was a great end to her week with us!
  • Price:  $15/drink totally worth the view

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– LOVE LOVE LOVE, this place for Greek food. I’ve actually been to 3 of their locations and love each of them. This specific location near Union Square is larger than the East Village spot- so they were MORE than happy to seat us with the big stroller and gave us a huge space all to ourselves in the back, away from the crowd. Also, stalker note, it’s right around the corner from Alec Baldwin’s apt. so maybe you can spot a celebrity if that’s on your list of things to do. Check them out on Yelp.
  • Food: Amazing. The trio dip sampler is the way to go for cold appetizers, and grilled octopus is amazing. I usually get the crab cakes app as my main dish at the East Village location bc they are HUGE and are all lump crab meat with hardly any breading. BUT, they don’t have the crab cakes at this location. I got the grilled chicken and it was large enough for my hubby and I to split and take food home! Amazing amazing food!!
  • Price: $36 bucks after tax, and tip. Can’t beat it for the quality and HUGE quantity.
