This blog is all about hitting the top restaurants with BIG strollers, tiny babies in big cities. So check in to see where Bastian and I have ventured and if we were asked to leave once they saw our HUGE SUV of a stroller roll in(we have a Bugaboo Cameleon, it’s big). We’re eaten’ food, burpin babies and taken names.

IT’S A BIRTHDAY POST

IMG_3888

This post is going to be about my baby boy who is now a toddler. I can’t even believe the year has gone by so fast. It seems impossible that one year ago I had only just met the love of my life. Happy Birthday my love, I hope you have the most adventurous life filled with love and laughter.

New York City and kids Birthday Parties is no joke friends. It’s NO Joke. First place to start, the place. Where can you house 15 plus people and let your little one be free to crawl around in a clean, safe environment? I asked other moms…the YMCA, baby gyms like AppleSeeds or MyGym, a restaurant. So I called these spots and got quotes.

$450/HR with 3 HOUR MINIMUM?!?!!?!?! Excuse me YMCA, come again? Holy cow. That was just the beginning. I’m not cheap but that was more than my 16th birthday, 21st and probably 30th all in one. So I had to start thinking out side the box…Churches, schools, bookstores…then it hit me. Rehearsal studios. Being an actor in NY you are introduced to another world that most don’t even know exists. The black box theaters, studios, and more. So I booked a rehearsal studio and threw a baby’s 1st Birthday. BOOM.

We were able to bring in our own food, drinks, toys, and decorations. The only thing we needed was to make sure we left it the way we found it. Most of these spaces also provide chairs and tables (yes all the other kid birthday spots charge per table and chair).

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION:

I won’t say exactly which space we threw our party at because it’s sort of on the down low and I’m sure the artists would be a little peeved if all these kids were swarming the quiet studio space with these events. But, I will provide a list of resources for other moms to call and check out…just best to say it’s for a birthday part and not mention it’s a kid. HINT.

Ripley-Grier studios– Several locations around the city.

440 Studios– East Village and under $40/hour

Roy Arias Studios–  They are cool with kid birthday’s but have special rates.

Art New York– Several spots

Shetler Studios– Lots of locations

These are just a few options and if you want more try this website below.

NYC Space Finder– you can pick your rate and location.

The LOOK:IMG_3853

I kept it super low key and simple. He’s 1 people. We filled the table with memorable quotes and info from this adorable company called CiinolinCiinolin_BirthCard_FA1_3__62396.1405323398.451.416 who has adorable stuff, and I decided to base my “theme” around the color of these cute cards. Yellow, light blue and brown.

FOOD:

I also thought of the babies here. I did light finger foods all of which were baby friendly. Fresh fruit, bite size rye bread, Vegan/Sugar Free treats made specially with the allergy notes from Whole Foods, Pirates Booty, Plum Organics Puffs in various flavors, and bite size cheese. It was over all pretty simple and we easily transported it all ourselves- in NYC no less. We did have a lot of hands on deck and the use of a GETT car which I use like my left arm. It’s still $10 bucks flat in the city…doesn’t get better people it just doesn’t. Use my code and get $20 bucks in your account when you sign up. I’m not joking, download that app. #GTKRIST7 use it. image2

WHOS WHO:

IMG_3889IMG_3877Bastian only has 1 friend but Mama has a few amazing friends who despite the fact I haven’t had a lot of one on one time in the past year at all, they are always so loving and supportive of every baby event. I feel so blessed to have friends like this in my life. Sara, Renie, Dan, Kyra and Robby you all are amazing people and we all love you so much!! Thanks for not ditching us when we became parents! 🙂 We also had a special visit from Bastian’s Sassy from Ga- who braved the cold weather to spend time with us and celebrate his day!! She spoiled this boy so much from endless toys, books, bath toys, treats to quality cuddle time, boy loves his Sassy.

Phil and Teds Modern Convertible High Chair #Baby #ProductReviews #BabyProducts #PhilAndTeds

My name is Kristen Ruhlin, I’m a new mama to a boy named Bastian.

This part of our blog is about our stay in Los Angeles. We are trying out new baby products and new LA foodie spots with our big a@# Bugaboo Stroller.

RANKINGRiding Dirty (1)- the lowest of the low;  Strollin (5)- kindly asked us to hit the road; Rollin (10)- these ballers know how to roll.

The Product  “PhilandTeds-Poppy High Chair

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin- This chair is so cool and sleek. It’s super easy to keep clean, extremely light to move around here and there…and it converts with your baby as they grow…HOW COOL IS THAT?! The sleek backing of the chair does look a little “hard” at first glance, but don’t be fooled, it’s just as soft as our regular Boon high chair we have at home in NYC. And to compare the 2…Boon is SUPER Heavy, and does take up a lot of room in our small NYC Space.
  • Price: Good deal. The fact that this chair converts over time makes it a fantastic deal, and it’s sturdy while being the lightest chair I’ve ever used. Under $200 and very competitively priced! Get one!!

The Spot:  “Casimir” 1022A Lexington Ave. UES, NYC & 103 Ave. B LES

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– Not only did we have 2 BIG A@# Strollers, and 2 teething babies…we had 4 adults and walked right up and sat down at a table big enough for all of us! Woot Woot!!! No folding strollers, no high chairs- it’s just not how we roll yet. The kiddos rolled right up to the side of the table and joined us, brunch side. Mind you this was the UES location, I repeat the UES location, which screams SPACE. I haven’t hit up the LES yet and will do so as soon as I can with an update on here. Side note- Giggle is right down the street. Score.
  • Food:  The brunch menu was pretty standard but very yum. They were advertising a corn and squash soup which we never saw- it was red and creamy like a tomato bisque but still yummy according to Lindsay…and they take special orders for eggs and diet requests. Awesome. Plus, no evil eyes when feeding our babes at the table.
  • Price:  $12-19 per meal for brunch Yelp
  • Location:  UES and LES Spots- We hit up the UES location off Lexington and 73rd. This typically is a trek from our hood in the East Village/Styu Town but with GETT car service for the rest of 2014 it’s a no brainer…$10 flat rate rides people…$10. Boom. Download that app now.

The Spot:  “Americana Diner” 1160 Rt 35  Shrewsbury, NJ 07702

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– Strolled into this American diner joint, and without even a word the manager sees us and says “I’ve got the perfect spot for you guys, give me 2 seconds…” and it seriously took like 2 seconds. The place was packed and servers were running back and forth during the Sat. morning breakfast crowd but they were so sweet and made us feel right at home from the second we stepped foot inside. I also saw and heard them treat other families with strollers this way too. Great workers.
  • Food: It’s your typical diner food. I however, have never met a plate of eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast I haven’t liked or finished. If you’re interested you can check them out on yelp.
  • Price: Less than $12 bucks for both of us to eat and be full. Done and Done.
  • Location:  Shrewsbury, New Jersey

The Spot:  “Village Taverna”  81 University Place New York, NY 10003   212.982.3580

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– LOVE LOVE LOVE, this place for Greek food. I’ve actually been to 3 of their locations and love each of them. This specific location near Union Square is larger than the East Village spot- so they were MORE than happy to seat us with the big stroller and gave us a huge space all to ourselves in the back, away from the crowd. Also, stalker note, it’s right around the corner from Alec Baldwin’s apt. so maybe you can spot a celebrity if that’s on your list of things to do. Check them out on Yelp.
  • Food: Amazing. The trio dip sampler is the way to go for cold appetizers, and grilled octopus is amazing. I usually get the crab cakes app as my main dish at the East Village location bc they are HUGE and are all lump crab meat with hardly any breading. BUT, they don’t have the crab cakes at this location. I got the grilled chicken and it was large enough for my hubby and I to split and take food home! Amazing amazing food!!
  • Price: $36 bucks after tax, and tip. Can’t beat it for the quality and HUGE quantity.
  • Location:  Union Square

B Man hit’s up The Marrow during Restaurant Week 2014

The Spot:  “The Marrow” 99 bank st. (corner of greenwich & bank streets)new york, ny 10014 212.428.6000

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– It was smack dab in the middle of NY Restaurant Week and they not only easily sat us with the big A@# stroller, they did it at rush hour 730pm with no wait. B was wide awake the whole time, chewing his Plum Organic Super Puffs, and Baby Mum-Mum’s..shaking his rattle…no one said anything but how cute he was. They were zoo welcoming.
  • Food: The Marrow Burger is the way to go here. We were with a large group and practically got the whole menu, so I sampled a bit of everything and can honestly say DO NOT get the chicken Milanese, it was tasteless. The Quail was uber tiny so be sure you ate before. The Hanger steak was good. Skate was also pretty good but not filling.
  • Price: It’s not cheap. The burger was $17 bucks, and I didn’t get wine this time. For the price of the burger I’d probably rather hit up The Spotted Pig-however, there is NO WAY they are seating a stroller in that joint.

Union Square Cafe with Baby B

Bastian headed to Union Square Cafe in NYC

Bastian headed to Union Square Cafe in NYC

So we hit up this NY classic joint with some out of town friends and family. I had only been once before and that was only for cocktails years ago. B man felt necessary to put on the Paparazzi shades for the occasion.

Afterwards, it was great to hit up the playground. So I have to say Union square location does have that as a plus after the meal.

RANKINGRiding Dirty (1)- the lowest of the low;  Strollin (5)- kindly asked us to hit the road; Rollin (10)- these ballers know how to roll.

The Spot: “The Union Square Cafe”  21 E 16th St, New York, NY 10003 (212) 243-4020

  • Baby B Rank:  Strollin- They did seat us with the stroller, which was smaller than usual this time bc we had the car seat in rather than the bassinet this time. We called ahead of time, but still had to wait for them to put the table together. It was a lunch time rush perhaps, and they were able to seat us, just not too excited about it.
  • Food: The food is good and has interesting choices. It’s not the spot to hit if you’re starving or want to pay less than $50 bucks. Skate Sandwich was very good, and filled me up. My husband was less than thrilled with the pasta choices for the price. We also sampled a sunflower root app which I didn’t see on the menu -we knew the waitress so I think she hooked us up- but I never had that before and it was awesome!
  • Price: Super expensive for bopping a baby on your lap while eating. Save for a date night.
  • Location:  Union Square

Babies Who Brunch

Bastian and his mama K

Bastian and I hitting up “Rue B” in the East Village on Sunday Brunch 2014

My name is Kristen Ruhlin, I’m a new mama to a boy named Bastian. That’s right, Bastian- no “Se”- just like the kid in “The Neverending Story”. I’ve been working as an actress in New York and Los Angeles since I graduated college from Ohio State University several years ago and since moving to NY I have become a total foodie…from diners to dives to Per Se (I’m pretty sure Oprah has eaten here). Also, I’m not 300 pounds, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but just for the record. I just like me some good grub. FYI, I grew up in WV so it’s ok for me to use southern slang too.

Stay tuned to where we’ll be hitting up for Labor Day and the US Open 2014.

RANKING: Riding Dirty (1)- the lowest of the low;  Strollin (5)- kindly asked us to hit the road; Rollin (10)- these ballers know how to roll.

The Spot:  “Rue B” 188 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009 (212) 358-1700

  • Baby B Rank:  Rollin– they were more than accommodating to give us the larger space for our big A#$ stroller. Even though it got busy they never made us hit the road. Not a ton of loud drunks that could scare the baby either. We were a group of 7 and waited less than 10 min.
  • Food: It’s ok – Egg Corleone was good, salmon plate could have done without. Drinks are great and well priced plus can’t beat free w. food.
  • Price: Awesome $12.95 Brunch which includes a coffee, and mixed drink.
  • Location:  East Village Ave. B and 14th
